24th Annual Traditional Arts & Arms Making Workshop

October 5-11, 2013 Conner Prairie's hands-on classes provide you a rare opportunity to work closely with some of the nation's best craftsmen. A low student-to-instructor ratio allows you direct interaction with a pro and the opportunity to build upon your skill set, whether you are a greenhorn or seasoned expert. Basic Blacksmithing
Saturday-Sunday, October 5-6
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Join Nathan Allen as you learn the basics of blacksmithing. Students will learn skills such as using a forge, drawing, punching, hardening and tempering steel, and forge welding. Projects such as s-hooks, fireplace poker, chain links and a fork will be made.

Carving
Saturday-Sunday, October 5-6
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Learn basic carving techniques under the tutelage of John Schippers. Using simple carving knives, students will learn proper design and layout of long rifle relief carving. Original examples of period long rifles and pistols will be on display for students to reference in their work. Tools required.

Hornworking: Recreating the Philadelphia Screw-Tip Horn
Saturday-Tuesday, October 5-8
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Wednesday, October 9
8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Further develop your hornmaking skills through the construction of a southern banded horn. Hornsmith Art Decamp will discuss the history and architectural styles of powder horns. Learn lathe techniques for turning in both horn and wood. Other techniques covered include proper horn selection, scraping, heating, and shaping and coloring of horn. Tools required.

Hearth Cooking
Sunday, October 6
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Learn to prepare a traditional meal over an open fire. Enjoy the smell of wood smoke as Hearth Cooking Expert Sarah Withrow shares her knowledge. Learn to blend traditional techniques with historical and contemporary recipes that are perfect for home entertaining, reenacting or camping.

Southern Backcountry Design
Sunday, October 6
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Delve into the art and culture of of 18th and early 19th-century Virginia and the Carolinas with folk artist Ken Scott. Examine design elements used on furniture, grave stones, ironwork, horns and firearms, and learn the basic techniques for creating a Virginia fraktur or manuscript in the southern style. Tools and materials required.

Traditional Barrel Making
Monday-Tuesday, October 7-8
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Wednesday, October 9
8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Work with Blacksmith Nathan Allen to discover the process of forging and finishing a skelp-welded gun barrel. Through a combination of demonstration and hands-on, the class will work through the steps of welding a barrel, making reaming and rifling tools, and finishing the inside and outside of the barrel.

Leather Work
Monday-Tuesday, October 7-8
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Wednesday, October 9
8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Join Ken Scott as he teaches the unique style of making hunting bags and pouches. Pattern development and basic leatherworking techniques will be covered as well as Ken's unique antiquing methods.Tools required.

Engraving
Monday-Friday, October 7-11
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Learn the art of metal engraving from Master Engraver John Schippers. Using practice pieces, discover basic design, tool selection and sharpening techniques. Tools required.

Decorative Techniques for Redware Pottery
Tuesday, October 8
6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Learn how to lay out a design, glaze and carve on Pennsylvania German and Early New England redware. Take home an heirloom piece of pottery to cherish for a lifetime.

Knifesmithing
Wednesday, October 9
1 - 5 p.m.
Thursday-Friday, October 10-11
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Under the tutelage of Dwight Gallian, students will learn about the history and manufacture of a traditional hand-forged knife. Class will include materials selection, forging and finishing a functional knife. Tools required.

Axe Forging
Wednesday, October 9
1 - 5 p.m.
Thursday-Friday, October 10-11
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Learn traditional forging techniques from Blacksmith Nathan Allen. Students will examine stylistic differences and construction techniques used on historic axes and will then forge and finish an axe of their own. Tools required.

Document Box
Wednesday, October 9
1 - 5 p.m.
Thursday-Friday, October 10-11
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Traditional Furniture Maker Justin Kauffman will guide the process of making an early 18th-century document box. This dovetailed oak box will begin with a green log. Students will learn to rive out the proper pieces, dimension the boards and do the dovetail and captured panel joinery needed to assemble.
